After church one day, the postman arrives with a letter for one of the Mortalese women announcing that her brother Pacifico will soon be arriving from Scotland.

A few days later, Pacifico is met off the bus down below by his brother and sister.  They walk up to Mortale where he hands out presents to the locals.  He gives his sister a large Scottish rug and then they all celebrate with wine, music and dancing.

A few weeks later, Pacifico and an old woman set off down the old road to pick olives.  Whilst reaching for a branch, Pacifico falls to the ground.  News reaches the village and everyone rushes down to the scene.  Pacifico's sister grabs the rug and runs down.  When they get there, Pacifico is motionless and a boy is sent to get the doctor, who arrives by donkey and declares that Pacifico is dead.  His sister lays out the rug from Scotland and Pacifico is carried back up the mountain in the rug to the church.
