The Lawnmower

When John and I moved to Benett Drive, we were made to feel very welcome by all the neighbours and living opposite us were a delightful American couple.  He was the Captain of a large P&O cruise ship and, one day, he told us an amusing story about Dad, who, by this time, was living in San Martino, Pisa.

Dad and Romanita had emigrated back to Italy a couple of years previously and Dad was trying to create a bowling green lawn at his new house, similar to the beautiful lawn he once treasured in Hove.  But he always maintained that the new mower he had bought in Italy was no good and that the best mower he ever had was the Webb mower he had left behind at Benett Drive.  On a visit home he happened to meet the Captain of the cruise ship, who just happened to mention they often sailed around the Mediterranean.  At this point, Dad did not hesitate to ask the Captain whether he could load his trusty Webb lawnmower aboard and, next time he was sailing in the Med, if he could possibly divert the ship to drop it off at the nearby port of Livorno.  Dad would then drive to collect it and the bowling green lawn would soon be established in Pisa to British standards.
